Former AFC Leopards and Kakamega Homeboyz shot stopper Edwin Mukolwe has blamed local coaching methods for the declining standards of goalkeeping in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL).

Mukolwe warns that the situation could worsen if urgent corrective measures are not taken.

The custodian believes Kenyan coaches must take responsibility for the growing number of errors that continue to cost teams points.

Kenyan coaches are solely responsible for the increased mistakes leading to goals in the league. It is time they take full responsibility and change their ways; otherwise, we are heading into a dark place for Kenyan keepers,” said the Kakamega High School alumnus.

Goalkeeping blunders have become a recurring theme in the league, raising concerns among fans and stakeholders.

Some supporters have gone as far as linking the mistakes to match manipulation, citing the seemingly comical nature of certain goals conceded.

Recent examples include KCB goalkeeper Boniface Munyasa, who was beaten at his near post by a harmless-looking free kick from Nairobi United’s Ovella Ochieng.

Last weekend, Tusker’s Brandon Obiero was also caught out when a defensive mix-up allowed AFC Leopards forward Samuel Ssenyonjo to score his second goal in a 4-0 defeat of the Brewers.

Obiero had earlier failed to deal with a long-range shot from Nairobi United left-back Kevin Otiende in a 1-0 loss in December.

Further, the club's first-choice keeper Brian Opondo produced a costly howler against Gor Mahia, allowing the ball to slip through his legs into the net.

Despite the growing list of errors, Mukolwe insists that goalkeepers should not shoulder all the blame.

He dismissed claims of match-fixing as a lazy explanation that distracts from the real problem.

They should not twist the narrative towards goalkeepers and manipulation. That is an easy target. Lazy journalism will keep shouting this after every mistake,” Mukolwe said. “I will share my full sentiments in a video soon.”

Having come jumped to the defence of his fellow glove man-and seemingly shielding them from blame, it raises two fundamental questions: Who are the goalkeeper trainers responsible for the easy goals witnessed in the league? Does Mukolwe know whether match fixing happens in the FKFPL or not?

The former Bidco United man, in an interview with Sporty FM, admitted to have been approached by match fixers to help predetermine the outcome of unspecified match.

Mukolwe announced his retirement from professional football at the beginning of the year, bringing an end to a career that stretched to a decade.

Besides AFC Leopards and Kakamega Homeboyz, the 28-year-old also turned out for Wazito, Bidco United, Nairobi Stima, and Nairobi City Stars.
