Two first half goals from DRC international Hennock Inonga Baka and Tanzanian forward Denis Kibu helped Simba end an over four year wait for victory against perennial rivals Yanga as they recorded a 2-0 win to get the bragging rights and all the full set of points in the Kariakoo Derby played on Sunday evening.

The result also saw Simba cut down Yanga’s eight-point lead at the top of the table to only five points in a result that was Yanga’s first loss since February in all competitions.

In the match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Simba could not have asked for a perfect start as Baka rose highest to head in a perfectly worked corner kick routine that saw Shomari Kapombe float in an inch perfect cross that he timed perfectly to give Wekundu wa Msimbazi the lead after just two minutes.

Simba managed to extend their lead in some style as Denis unleashed a thunderbolt in the top right corner that left Djigui Diarra in the Yanga goal with no chance as the ball rifled into the back of the net giving Simba some breathing space going into the break.

That was how the game would end as Simba, whose defence was marshalled by Kenyan international Joash Onyango, resolutely thwarted any threat to their goal to seal the three points.

Prior to the win, Simba had not won a league match against Timu Ya Wananchi in eight encounters, drawing six and losing two.

Gor Mahia’s former Brazilian tactician Roberto Oliveira however managed to end that poor streak in what was his first derby since taking charge at the club, helping Simba to within five point of the league leaders with four games remaining before the 2022/2023 Tanzanian Premier league season concludes.
