Kayole Starlets ready for relegation as financial woes bite

WPL 12-team unified league kicks off tomorrow.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women Premier League (WPL) side Kayole Starlet are not ready to honour their league matches with action set to kick off on Saturday 13 November with a match pitting Wadadia FC against debutants Bunyore Starlets.

Kayole have their season-opening match scheduled for Sunday 14 November against league defending champions Thika Queens but coach Joshua Sakwa say they will not be playing unless they are assured of league sponsorship.

“The reason the last season was played in zonal format was because teams did not have the financial muscle to sustain a unified league. What then has changed now,” Sakwa questioned.

He continued, “I have been with this team long enough to see players suffer and I would not want to see them go through that again. We have taken eight and even seven players to honour matches away in Western Kenya, mind you without a coach to accompany them, and that is a position the team is not ready to find themselves in again.”

Kayole are set to face last season’s finalists Gaspo FC in the second week of action, according to the tentative fixture shared on 18 October and then face Zetech Sparks in the third round of action.

“We were set to have a meeting on Friday 12 November ahead of the league kickoff. The meeting was called off this morning following the happenings of Thursday where the federation was disbanded and replaced by a caretaker committee. If the league is to proceed as planned, we will give our three walkovers and get relegated instead of making our players suffer,” explained Sakwa.
