Once the FTA is rolled out, it will complement the current broadcaster, Azam TV
The Kenyan national broadcaster will soon air the FKF Premier League both on radio and TV on a free-to-air platform, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has disclosed.
There have been behind-the-scenes talks between the government, the federation, and league broadcaster Azam over the possibility of handing the national broadcaster select FTA games, and in what appears to be a breakthrough in the talks, Namwamba has confirmed that football will be returning to the national broadcaster soon.
"I am happy to announce that the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is returning to KBC TV and radio on free to air live broadcasts," the CS disclosed on Tuesday evening when he visited veteran football commentator Leonard Mambo Mbotela.
The government will, in return, pump millions into the league, which will see FKF Premier League teams get more money in monthly grants.
Once the FTA is rolled out, it will complement the current broadcaster, Azam TV. The Tanzanian broadcaster recently inked a seven-year deal with FKF worth over KES 145 million.
During the unveiling of the Azam deal, FKF President Nick Mwendwa disclosed that they were engaging two more partners who were willing to come on board. Mozzart Sports understands that the two partners are the national broadcaster and a gaming firm that were set to be the league’s title sponsor. The deal with the gaming firm has since grown cold.
“We are speaking to some other partners, and as I explained to the club bosses earlier this week, we have talks ongoing with two more potential partners, and once we have this agreed, we will be back here to announce what each club will get,” Mwendwa said during the unveiling on August 31 in Nairobi.
Azam began airing the games, starting with the Mashemeji derby between the AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia played a fortnight ago. Last weekend, they aired three matches and are set to screen two games outside Nairobi this coming week.
