Habib Beye was a standout defender and is now close to signing a deal with the Ligue 1 strugglers

Many shy, silent heroes spread the glory of African football across Europe in previous decades. One of them is definitely Habib Beye, the former formidable defender of Olympique Marseille, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and the Senegalese national team.

Today, the 45-year-old Beye - working as a Red Star Paris coach for the last 12 months - is really close to inking a potentially promising job.

According to FootMercato, he is in a pole position to become the new Stade Brestois 29 manager following the dismissal of Michel Der Zakarian on October 11.

"First integrated into a shortlist, Beye, 45, seems to favour Brest sports director Gregory Lorenzi. Beye's representatives are on good terms with Brest. Remember that Habib Beye still exercises, in parallel with his position as a trainer at Red Star, the consultant function on TV Canal Plus," writes FootMercato.

Beye represented Senegal at that famous 2002 FIFA World Cup, when The Lions of Teranga stunned the world with their amazing performances, thus reaching the 1/4 finals.
