Maina was a key figure in Koln’s promotion to the Bundesliga this season, flanking the midfield with admirable execution.

The 26-year-old, born in Germany to a Kenyan father and a German mother, making him eligible to play for both countries, joined Koln in January 2022 from Hannover 96 on a free transfer.

Maina, who is primarily a left winger but can play on the right or as an attacking midfielder, was a key figure in the club last season, helping The Billy Goats return to the Bundesliga after they were relegated in the 2023/24 season.

However, this season the winger has seen a reduced role under coach Lukas Kwasnik and has made only six appearances in the Bundesliga, most of them being cameos from the bench.

According to Sports Bild and The Tabloid, the pacy winger, as well as the Bundesliga club, are considering a January move for the winger, who is keen to have more playing time under his belt.

The publication further noted that the Kenyan has attracted interest from two fellow Bundesliga sides as well as a club in the second division.

It is not yet clear which teams are after Maina’s services, but the clubs are rumoured to be Borussia Mönchengladbach and Mainz 05, who had all expressed interest in Maina earlier in the year.

The two clubs were reported to be monitoring Maina’s situation in March with a view to signing him, but Koln held onto him after lifting the 2.Bundesliga title and thereby promoted to the top tier.

In turn, the club renewed Maina’s contract, which was set to expire, thereby locking out his suitors, including Hamburger, who were also promoted to the top tier.

As January approaches, Maina’s suitors are expected to bid strongly for the €4 million (approximately Ksh600 million) valued winger.
