Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet leads the way after becoming the first woman in history to run under 14 minutes in the 5000m. Her 13:58.06 performance at the Wanda Diamond League in Eugene on Saturday, 5 July, is now officially recognised as the world record, bettering Gudaf Tsegay’s 14:00.21 from 2023.

Chebet, who also holds the 10,000m world record, passed 3000m in 8:22.96 before finishing strongly to slice 2.15 seconds off the previous best.

“I’m so happy to become the first woman to run under 14 minutes,” Chebet said after her record-breaking race. “After Rome, where I ran 14:03, I knew I was capable of a world record. It feels amazing to see my hard work pay off and to make history for Kenya.”

In the men’s discus, Lithuania’s Alekna had his double record-breaking performance at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona ratified as well.

On Sunday, 13 April, the Olympic silver medallist opened with 74.89m to surpass his own world record before extending it to 75.56m in round four.

Both marks are now officially recognised. The competition was remarkable, with five athletes surpassing 70 metres, and Australia’s Matt Denny also beating Alekna’s previous world record with a throw of 74.78m.

Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis also had his latest achievement confirmed. At the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest on 12 August, the Olympic champion cleared 6.29m to set his 13th world pole vault record.

That mark improved on his 6.28m jump from Stockholm in June, continuing his remarkable dominance of the event.

With all three records now officially ratified, Chebet, Alekna, and Duplantis will carry their record-breaking momentum into the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo from Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 21 September 2025, where they aim to convert their historic form into global titles.
