Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage has expressed his confidence in Kenya's ability to ensure Morocco fails to score when the teams clash.
Kenya will welcome Morocco in a 2024 CHAN Group A match scheduled for today, Sunday, 10 August, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, from 1500 hrs.
The match, which will be Kenya's biggest test, at least on paper, if Morocco's recent success and ranking are anything to go by, will be key in determining the team that will proceed to the quarter finals.
Kibwage, who came on at half time against Angola and played an important role in securing the draw, called on fans to rally behind the team, promising to once again put the body in the line of defense.
“They (fans) have pushed us even when it seemed impossible for us to get results, and they will be important again against Morocco. I just want to promise them that once again we will defend well for the whole 90 minutes,” said Kibwage.
With Morocco expected to have a lion’s share of possession and attacks, Kibwage fancies his chances of shutting them down with the support of the 12th player.
“That is my department, and I feel I have a big role to play in the match. I just want to urge fans to come out and support us,” he added.
The former AFC Leopards defender’s performance against Angola drew praise from coach Benni McCarthy, who termed him an important player and one who will likely play a big role against Morocco.
“Every player looks forward to getting a chance to represent the country, and so when such positive remarks come from a coach like McCarthy, who has been at the top, there can never be a better motivation,” stated Kibwage.
The former KCB captain revealed the secret behind his solid performances off the bench, which have equally caught the attention of fans who have sung his praises on social media.
“I have been mentally ready throughout the tournament, and when matches progress, I can always tell that my services will be required and therefore have to be alert.
The praises fill me with joy and assurance of the good work we put on the pitch. I only have to keep producing top performances to repay their faith,” he remarked.
