Kigonya noted that the Tanzanian Premier League and Zambian Super League are similar.

Former Sofapaka custodian Mathias Kigonya has compared the Kenya, Zambia, Uganda and Tanzanian top-tier leagues after separate stints in the sub-Saharan nations.

The diminutive shot-stopper recently completed a move from Zambian outfit Forest Rangers to Tanzanian heavyweights Azam FC.

Kigonya drew comparisons between the Zambian Super League and the Tanzanian Premier League as he noted that the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) is physical.

“Talent-wise Uganda is good, I cannot lie about that, in Zambia, the league is very competitive because it has so many foreign players and the league in Kenya is fine a bit of competitiveness and they like playing a physical game,”

“Tanzania is also a good league - people know how to play football, they have talent and the league is a bit competitive due to the many foreign players like Zambia,” said Kigonya in an interview with Safari Soccer.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) five-year ranking, the Zambian Super League sits in seventh position in the continent while the Tanzanian Super League is ranked 13th.

Kenya comes in at 15th while Uganda is placed 18th on the list of the best ranked African leagues statistically.

Kigonya also reiterated that he was forced to leave Kenya owing to the heavy taxation in the country and the high cost of living.

“It got to a time where I could not manage the high cost of living because they introduced tax and you had to pay it so I had to look for other opportunities though it was a hard decision to make,” added Kigonya.
