Mathare will now be hoping to bounce back to winning ways following their 2-0 defeat to Gor Mahia on Thursday, 30 October at Kasarani Stadium.
Mathare United midfielder Mohamed Kilume believes that cutting down on errors and being more clinical in front of goal will be crucial if they are to overcome AFC Leopards in their upcoming clash on Sunday, 2 November.
The experienced midfielder, formerly with Sofapaka, attributed the Slum Boys’ slow start to the campaign to costly mistakes and a lack of efficiency in the final third, factors he insists have held back the 2008 Premier League champions.
“We’ve noticed that we need to minimise our mistakes and convert our chances because we usually create at least four clear-cut opportunities per game but only manage to score once. That has cost us matches. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and equally solid in defence,” Kilume told the club’s media team.
Since the season kicked off on September 21, John Kamau’s charges have conceded six goals and scored four, underlining their defensive frailties and attacking inefficiency.
Mathare will now be hoping to bounce back to winning ways following their 2-0 defeat to Gor Mahia on Thursday, 30 October at Kasarani Stadium.
The task, however, will be far from easy as they face a rejuvenated AFC Leopards side that has gone five matches unbeaten, including back-to-back 2-1 victories over KCB and Shabana FC.
Ingwe will be eager to extend their unbeaten run to six matches and make it three wins on the trot.
Kilume, however, remains optimistic, urging his teammates to maintain composure amid what he expects to be an intense atmosphere generated by Leopards’ passionate supporters.
“We expect a big atmosphere because they will be playing on Sunday, so the crowd will be intense. We need to stay composed, especially since we are coming from a loss. It’s important to get back on track immediately,” he noted.
Reflecting on their current campaign compared to last season, Kilume expressed confidence that the team is in a better position to turn things around.
“I remember last season we didn’t start well compared to now. This time it’s not as bad, but we still need to revive our season starting with the AFC Leopards match to build confidence for the remaining fixtures,” he concluded.
