Kingi impressed with Murang'a Seal's defensive record

The club has conceded twice in seven league matches

Murang’a Seal have the meanest defence in the opening seven rounds of the season as the league debutants have conceded twice and kept four clean sheets.

Seal who are in their first season in the top league after gaining promotion last season have punched above their weight to sit third with 13 points, three off log leaders Posta Rangers.

Three out of their four wins have been of identical 1-0 score lines over Nzoia Sugar, Kakamega Homeboyz, and Shabana with the one being a 2-0 win over Shabana.

Coach Gabriel Kingi attributes the good start in the top flight to the defensive discipline the team has been exhibiting.

The experienced tactician who succeeded Vincent Nyaberi before the season kicked off said solid defending was non-negotiable for his rear men whom he lauded for embracing his coaching philosophy with ease.

We have good defenders who understood my philosophy within a short term. I believe in safety first and free-flowing football. If you defend well, then it is easier to win matches as you will need a goal or two to get points,” said Kingi.

I started playing football as a defender so I understand the art of defending. I know the kind of formations that make it hard for opposing teams to score,” added the 55-year-old tactician.

On the flip side, Seal are among the teams who have been struggling to win matches in a convincing way as the team has kissed the back of the net five times.

Much as their low goal returns have been effective, Kingi wants the forward line to step up as he believes the going will get tough as the league approaches the quarter mark.

The strikers have to improve going forward. We want them to be in the right shape and score goals freely,” said the former Thika United coach.
