League Cup madness: Preston eliminate Fulham after the longest penalty shootout in competition history
Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 18.09.24. | 12:37
Ryan Ledson was the hero of the Deepdale team
It was an exciting night in the English League Cup, but what happened at Deepdale Stadium during the match between Preston and Fulham made history in the competition. With no winner after 90 minutes, the game went to a penalty shootout, which became the longest in the League Cup’s history.
The home team won 16-15. We can only imagine how nerve-wracking this must have been for the fans of both teams watching the game. The hero of the night was midfielder Ryan Ledson. The team, led by Paul Heckingbottom, missed only once during the shootout, while the tragic figure for Marco Silva's side was Timothy Castagne.

Apart from this match, two other games also went to penalties. Stoke eliminated Fleetwood, who simply stood no chance, missing four times from the spot. Everton continued their losing streak, with an unbelievable defeat to Bournemouth still haunting Sean Dyche’s squad. Southampton celebrated at Goodison Park, with veteran Ashley Young missing the crucial penalty.
