Mats Hummels' early red card affected the entire tie at the packed Signal Iduna Park (2-3)

Borussia Dortmund's inconsistent form keeps taking its toll, as BVB lost a Saturday night pulsating derby to RB Leipzig 3-2 at Signal Iduna Park.

Despite a stalemate (1-1) at the interval, the visitors were always much closer to scoring and made the most of the fact Borussia spent most of the game with ten men after Mats Hummels' early sent-off.

The former German international made a professional foul as the last man and was shown a direct red card after a VAR consultancy.

As if it was not enough bad luck for Edin Terzic's team, Bensebaini accidentally netted into his own net for 0-1 after a corner-kick in the 32nd minute.

However, the hosts were in no mood to surrender as they fought back in the last seconds of the first half thanks to Niklas Sule. The defender, who came on following Hummels' expulsion, reacted superbly on the far post to level the score just before the break.

And as much as Dortmund's defenders provided their teammates with more offensive potential in such challenging circumstances, their hollow defending was severely punished.

Baumgartner made a slalom in the final third before slotting it after Xavi Simons' effort that BVB's keeper denied.

Paulsen made it 3-1 from a ruthless counter at the beginning of the added time. Dortmund, though, managed to peg one back again through Fullkrug and even had a chance of a miraculous draw, but Sule's last-gasp effort went inches wide off the left post.
