Levis Opiyo kept his first Wazito clean sheet against Zoo FC. But with teams who defeated the Kericho having been docked points, Opiyo, weirdly, may just be going for his first clean sheet against his former charges

If it so happens that football in the country will resume this coming Wednesday, 12th May, as Football Kenya Federation has tentatively set, it will have been exactly fifty days since a ball was last kicked in the country.

One of the two games lined up for that day pits record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia against Francis Kimanzi’s Wazito FC at the MISC Stadium in Kasarani, a game that for the first time sees goalkeeper Levis Opiyo, who is the current preferred custodian at Wazito, face his old employers – a work station he left (after terminating his contract) without getting much game time under his belt. And there is no better time for Opiyo to prove his worth.

Surprisingly, Gor Mahia only have two clean sheets to their name in the thirteen games they have played. In addition to that, the goalkeeping department has been the subject of unending troubles that have plagued the green army when it comes to performances this season, pressure that culminated in goalkeeper coach Willis Otieno tendering in his resignation.

The problems at Gor aside, former custodian Opiyo believes that the discipline he has donned when sports was suspended in the country will easily sail him through the match.

“Training to me has been like a routine. Despite the stoppage in play, I have been keeping fit like a soldier waiting to be deployed to duty anytime. This is my job, so I have to train regularly. When it comes to Gor, it not as if it will be the first time I will be playing my former employees, so I am not fazed at all. It is not a big thing to me and I intend to play it just like the other games,” Opiyo said.

Since joining Wazito during the mid-season transfer window , the former City Stars player has kept one clean sheet in five games played, coming in narrow 1-0 win over Zoo FC. And now with Zoo expelled from the 2020/2021 Football Kenya Federation Premier League and teams who defeated them docked points, weirdly, Opiyo may just be going for his first clean sheet against his former charges. His chance to showcase what they let go of.
