Liverpool's kryptonite - Portuguese managers

Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 08.01.25. | 17:37

The Reds failed to win in only five games this season, three of which they were up against teams with coaches from Portugal

Liverpool have had an exceptional season. The Anfield crew may even have made a better start than during any campaign under Jurgen Klopp. Still, even the best teams have to struggle sometimes, and in Liverpool's case, there might be a pattern called - Portuguese tactician.

Namely, the Reds have failed to win in only five matches this season - all in the Premier League - noting four draws and a single defeat while having a maximum 6/6 score in the Champions League. Interestingly, in three out of five of Liverpool's winless occasions, their rivals were led by a Portuguese gaffer.

The only man who managed to outsmart Arne Slot since the beginning of the current campaign was Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, as his Trees celebrated a 1-0 victory at Anfield back in September. Marco Silva and Fulham remained undefeated in Liverpool in mid-December, salvaging a 2-2 draw against the ten-man Reds, while Ruben Amorim's Man United secured the same result three days ago in the same place.

Apart from the three aforementioned Portuguese, only Arsenal's Spaniard Mikel Arteta (2-2) and one of only two domestic PL bosses, Eddie Howe, with his Newcastle (3-3), avoided defeat against Slot's machinery, though they are just exceptions that prove the rule.

Tonight, Liverpool will face Tottenham in London in the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinal, and if Ange Postecoglou does not find out that he has at least a drop of Portuguese blood in the meantime, the struggling Spurs will be in trouble.
