Machiavellian Bayern salvage a key draw against brave Lever

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 15.02.25. | 22:53

Xabi Alonso's crew hit the woodwork twice and had a massive chance in the dying minutes, but eventually fell short against defence-oriented Bavarians, who finished the game without a shot on target (?!) - 0-0

The Bundesliga derby seriously failed to meet expectations. The duel between the two leading teams, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, turned out to be the dullest of all games in the 22nd round of Germany's top flight. Mainly thanks to the Bavarians, who heavily relied on defence and consequently made only two attempts in total - both off target!

On the other hand, Xabi Alonso's men had 15 shots - but only three on target - hit the woodwork twice and wasted a colossal chance in the dying minutes, which could eventually cost them the title, as Bayern kept the eight-point advantage ahead of the last 12 Bundesliga rounds.

The Munich side's Machiavellian approach ultimately paid off, even though the game could have ended totally differently if Jeremie Frimpong and Nathan Tella's efforts had ended up behind Manuel Neuer's back instead of crashing against the crossbar or if Florian Wirtz had been more focused in the last minute.

Vincent Kompany opted to defend with all 11 players - yes, even Harry Kane?! - and it worked, though even the meticulous statisticians would need some time to remember the last time Bayern failed to make an attempt on target in a Bundesliga match.
