Michael Carrick’s side secured a 2–1 victory over a tricky Brentford team at Old Trafford in a very important match for Champions League qualification
We haven’t seen Manchester United like this in a long time – Michael Carrick’s men recorded a very important 2–1 home victory against Brentford, leaving them just one step away from qualifying for the Champions League next season. Who would have thought this would happen?
The hosts wasted no time asserting themselves, coming inches away from an early breakthrough in just the second minute. Kobbie Mainoo carved through the Brentford defense with a brilliant solo run and rounded the goalkeeper before squaring for Amad Diallo, whose goal-bound effort was heroically blocked on the line by Van den Berg.

United kept pushing and nearly found the opener again in the 8th minute. Bruno Fernandes delivered a pinpoint cross onto the head of Maguire, whose powerful header looked destined to cross the line, but Kelleher somehow clawed it away in stunning fashion.
The breakthrough finally came in the 11th minute, and it was fully deserved. Another Fernandes set-piece caused problems, with Maguire flicking the ball across goal for Casemiro, who reacted quickest to nod home from close range and make it 1-0.
Brentford responded well and nearly equalized in the 17th minute when Kayode found himself just five meters out, but Lammens produced a superb save to preserve United’s lead.
Back came United, with Diallo again involved in the 31st minute, meeting another Fernandes delivery, only to send his header straight at Kelleher. The visitors then had a golden spell before the break, with Igor Thiago twice failing to capitalize from excellent positions. First, he hesitated one-on-one with Lammens and moments later, Ayden Heaven intervened just in time to deny him again.

United thought they had doubled their advantage in the 41st minute through Diallo after a swift counterattack orchestrated by Fernandes, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
However, the second goal did arrive just two minutes later. A brilliant high press from Diallo won possession deep in Brentford’s half, Fernandes drove forward and picked out Benjamin Sesko, who kept his composure and finished confidently to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.
The first real chance after the break came in the 50th minute, when Harry Maguire found space inside the box and got a shot away, only for Kelleher to react well and deny the United defender.
Brentford responded ten minutes later with a decent opportunity of their own. After a series of rebounds inside the penalty area, Ouattara found himself in a promising position, but his effort drifted wide of the target.
The opening stretch of the second half was largely uneventful otherwise, with few clear-cut chances. Brentford gradually pushed forward in search of a way back into the match, while Michael Carrick’s side remained compact and disciplined at the back.
A major opportunity for the visitors arrived in the 71st minute. Following a corner, Ouattara met the ball at the far post and struck the woodwork with a header. He then attempted an acrobatic follow-up effort, but couldn’t connect cleanly, letting United off the hook.

United nearly added a third in the 77th minute through Casemiro. The Brazilian unleashed a powerful strike from around 30 meters out after a loose ball fell his way, sending it just past the post with Kelleher scrambling.
Everyone at Old Trafford probably thought the match would go by without much stress, but that wasn’t the case. In the 87th minute, Jensen made sure of that, striking brilliantly from 25 meters out and beating Lammens to make it 2–1, bringing tension to the Theatre of Dreams.
Still, the Red Devils managed to hold on until the end and secured a very important victory that almost certainly takes them to the Champions League next season.
