He couldn't make it even into a provisional squad with five keepers in it. Kepa is there but will hardly reach the World Cup

If the name of veteran Sergio Ramos is a surprise on the provisional La Furia Roja World Cup squad, then David de Gea's absence is probably even more significant.

The 31-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper couldn't make it into a 55-man list which is quite unbelievable, bearing in mind the fact the Spaniards are anything but packed with exquisite custodians.

According to AS, Luis Enrique, instead, picked Unai Simon (Athletic Club), Robert Sanchez (Brighton), David Raya (Brentford), and backup goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea) and David Soria (Getafe).

After being snubbed from Spain's Nations League matches, Enrique was asked why his current trio of goalkeepers sit ahead of the United stopper in the pecking order for the national team.

"I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me. That doesn't mean they won't make mistakes because errors are part of football. What they generate, I like a lot."

Enrique's comments specifically hint at the problems surrounding De Gea's distribution and lack of proactive sweeping off his line.
