Coach Southgate will reveal his final squad for the tournament on Friday

It’s only eight days until EURO 2024, and teams with extended lists of players are slowly trimming their squads. One of the favourites to win the tournament (and the finalists the last time around) is no different, but it seems that coach Gareth Southgate will cause a stir among the supporters with his latest choices. Just after it was revealed that James Maddison and Curtis Jones would be let go, the Athletic found out that Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire had been left out, too!

The reputable sports media outlet revealed that the players from Manchester giants will not be among the available forces for Gareth Southgate and will be excluded from the final 26-man squad., which was later confirmed by Gareth Southgate himself at the press conference. Regarding Maguire, this outcome was somewhat anticipated due to a calf injury that has kept the Manchester United defender out of action since April. After all, until he got injured, Maguire was Southgate’s favourite player, and was always called for England and always played, even when he was the third-choice defender for Erik ten Hag in Manchester United.

However, the surprising news is that the England manager has decided to drop one of Manchester City's stars. To be fair, Grealish has had a rather modest season with the Premier League champions, scoring only three goals in 36 official matches, which partly justifies the England manager's decision. Still, the fact that Grealish has been a regular member of Southgate's squad during previous challenges, including the 2021 European Championship, where they reached the final, makes this step particularly noteworthy. Based on the available squad, Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United has been given the nod over Grealish for his position. However, Phil Foden could also fill this role, which would be the most logical choice. Additionally, Jude Bellingham is expected to play significant minutes in the attacking midfield role, which Grealish would have occupied had he been included in the squad.

According to The Telegraph, the seven players expected to be omitted from the initial 33-man squad are James Maddison, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish, James Trafford, and Jarrad Branthwaite.
