The Sugar Millers are in their second season in the top flight and were tipped to perform better this term after finishing 14th in the last campaign.
However, the team has faced challenges, especially in the first half of the season and have won just six of their 26 matches so far.
Speaking to the press after battling out to a 1-1 draw against Nairobi United in an FKF Premier League match on Wednesday, 1 April, Xavier shared his fair assessment of his team.
“This is basically a young, new team. There are no players acquired from the top tier. Every single one of them was signed from the lower tier, the highest being the NSL (National Super League),” said Xavier.
Nevertheless, the experienced tactician is confident of the team's progress, exuding confidence in their ability to avoid relegation.
“We are building a team that will be able to compete better next season and hopefully challenge for the title soon. For now, our focus is remaining in the league.”
Despite their shortcomings, Mara have had a fairly good away record, losing just two matches on the road as compared to five at home, a matter Xavier explained.
“When you are playing away, it is not easy, and that is the mentality we have instilled in players, and therefore they remain focused, resilient and give their all,” he stated.
Alex Imbusia’s 88th-minute strike helped Mara to prevent a looming defeat on the road, cancelling out Kevin Wangaya’s 66th-minute goal.
“I appreciate the fact that we came out with a point even though we still missed opportunities to win the match. Each team had their own moments and in the end shared spoils,” Xavier remarked.
Mara are currently 11th on the log with 31 points and will face Posta Rangers in their next league match scheduled for Monday, 6 April.
