Wethuli missed the final nine matches of the season due to a thigh injury

Mathare United forward Eugene Wethuli has regretted that a thigh injury suffered in the final months of the concluded season has impeded him from securing lucrative deals in the ongoing transfer window.

Wethuli hurt his knee in later stages of the season and subsequently, missed the final nine rounds, a development that saw Posta Rangers and Kariobangi Sharks shelve their ambition to acquire his signature.

The burly forward who arrived at the 2008 league champions from relegated National Super League side Nairobi Stima revealed that the two teams had approached him but went mute after he was ruled out for more than a month.

Wethuli says that his progress under coach Frank Ouna was good enough to convince more teams of his quality but rued that the injury thwarted his plan.

"I was doing well until I hurt my thigh in the penultimate month of the concluded season. Teams had began knocking my door but they stopped the talks after I got injured. Had I remained fit, probably I would have attracted more offers," he said.

Having recovered, Wethuli disclosed that he was training on his own at Makongeni as he seeks to regain his form ahead of the new season where he intends to net more than five goals in the first leg.

The forward said he was forced to train by himself as Mathare senior players had not trooped back to training.

The club is understood to be conducting trials at the Goan Institute to plug in the gaps left by the players who have left in pursuit of greener pastures.

" I am working on my fitness in Makongeni where my journey began. It would have been better if we had resumed training but we haven't heard from the office. Nonetheless, I am hoping to hit my best and get more than five goals in the first leg of the new season, "he added.
