Kilume received his award prior to the FKF Premier League match against Sofapaka on Friday, 2 May, at the Dandora Stadium.
“Our outstanding player for the recently concluded month of April is Mohammed Kilume,” Mathare United announced on their Facebook page.
For his troubles, the former Sofapaka midfielder received goodies as an appreciation of his efforts.
“He walks away with a personalised trophy and a new pair of trainers courtesy of Zacosia Trading,” posted Mathare.
Kilume was instrumental in the Slum Boys’ April performances, providing stability in midfield and dictating play as Mathare went on to win two of their three league matches in the month.
The 2008 league champions started the month with a 3-2 win over Posta Rangers on Saturday, 5 April, followed by a 2-0 loss to Bidco United on Sunday, 20 April, and their remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over Tusker FC on Sunday, 27 April.
The 30-year-old beat his closest challenger, Musa Masika, who scored three of Mathare's five league goals in April.
In a recent interview with the club's media, Kilume, who wore the captain's armband in the team's loss to Bidco United, expressed his delight in playing and captaining the John Kamau-coached side.
“I am very grateful to be in the team. Having grown up in Pumwani, which is one of the zones of MYSA, it was always my dream to play for this club.
It was even a bigger privilege and honour to captain this team, which is one of the biggest teams in Kenya,” he stated.
The experienced midfielder was also in the starting eleven in their Friday clash over his former employer, Sofapaka, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Red-hot winger Edward ‘Ondimo’ Omondi gave Sofapaka the lead in the 75th minute, but Batoto ba Mungu’s advantage lasted barely a minute as in-form Musa Masika equalised a minute later to give Mathare a point that took them to 10th on the log with 37 points.
