Mathare United custodian Stephen Njung'e is convinced that the club's decent start in the National Super League is one of the strong indicators of their determination to get promoted.

The Slum Boys, saw their 25-year stay in the top flight come to an end last season after finishing second from bottom behind the Vihiga Bullets, who were also not spared by the axe.

Their demotion triggered a mass player exodus, leaving the management with the herculean task of rebuilding the team for the Super League assignments.

Further, the club had to add numbers to their technical bench after Collins Omondi, who handled the team in the closing stages of last season, quit for Naivas.

Despite bringing in more than ten players, the team hasn't shown signs of struggles, as Leonard Odipo's boys have won twice, drawn once, and lost a duel so far in the season.

Mathare who have a game in hand after their clash against Nairobi United was rescheduled, tasted their first defeat in the season after going down 3-1 to Mombasa Stars last weekend.

The fairly good start has left Njung'e certain of good things to come, including finishing inside the top two bracket and, subsequently, securing promotion.

"Our sole aim is to get promoted at the end of the season. The start has been promising, and there is room for improvement," said the goalkeeper.

Njung'e is not new to the Super League, as he featured in the competition for a couple of seasons with Wazito whose brand died at the end of last season following the sale, relocation, and branding of the outfit.

The shot stopper who joined Mathare after leaving the Nairobi City Stars maintains that the second tier is way tougher than the top flight and calls on his teammates to remain focused on their goals.

"The NSL is tougher than the top flight. Every team is always determined to get promoted or even to prove a point. You have to be extremely disciplined and hardworking if you are to achieve promotion," he stated.
