The team gave last season's activities a wide berth
Mayenje Santos Secretary General Joseph Onyango has expressed confidence in the team posting good results this season despite financial challenges.
The team has been out of competitive football for a season after refusing to take part in the FKF Division One Zone B league.
Mayenje, had secured promotion to the second tier during the reign of the Caretaker Committee but their elevation was reversed by FKF who annulled the 2021-2022 season.
Onyango noted that the decision to annul the season was enough to scare commercial partners who deserted the team.
“It has not been easy but we are grateful that after a one-year absence in football tournaments we are back and players are ready to hit the ground running from Sunday this weekend,” said Onyango.
“We aware it is not going to be easy for us now that we lost sponsors and partners who were supporting the team but we are hopeful now that we are back to the tournament they will reconsider their decision and come back to support us throughout this season, “he added.
He observed that despite the team having not participated in last season's Division 2 league, they did not lose any player to their competitors.
“The team is intact because all our players are available. We continued with regular training to keep players fit,” said Onyango.
Boniface Ngeno, one of Santos' diehard fans expressed pleasure that after a 12 months absence, they will finally watch their team play.
“This is our team and we shall continue supporting it. Players need us so from this weekend we shall come out and support them. We expect good results,” Ngeno offered.
Last weekend Mayenje Santos held a fund drive with a view to raising money to support the team and the secretary general noted that money raised would go a long way in providing accommodation for players, in addition to buying training equipment.
Malaba Giants, Obuccun, Opet FC and Hoha FC are other teams from Busia participating in the Division 2 in the 2023/24 season.
