Shabana FC forward Brian Michira says he is fully focused on closing in on the FKF Premier League’s top scorers after making his return from a four-month injury layoff, a period that coincided with the club’s struggles in the league.
The attacker returned to action last week, coming off the bench in Shabana’s 3–1 defeat to Nairobi United before earning few more minutes against Gor Mahia last Sunday.
Michira has scored four league goals so far this season and currently trails leading scorer Paul Okoth of Ulinzi Stars by five goals.
Despite the gap, the forward remains confident he can rejoin the 'Golden Boot' race.
“I am back, and even though I trail the top scorer by five goals, that does not mean I will not catch up,” Michira told the club’s media team. “My focus is to be fully ready and then push hard in the 'Golden Boot' race. I am happy to be back from injury and to be getting some minutes again.”
The forward admitted he is not yet at peak condition, but says he is close.
He termed his time on the sidelines as one of the toughest moments of his career.
“Right now, I can say I am about 95 per cent fit and still catching up to be fully ready,” he said. “Being injured is difficult for any player who loves football and cares about their career, but I thank God that I am back and ready to roar again.”
Michira also reserved praise for Shabana supporters, whom he described as the best in the country, especially for their unwavering support during a difficult run that saw the club lose four consecutive home matches.
“I want to thank the fans for standing with the club during a very difficult period,” he added. “There are no better fans in Kenya. I urge them to keep rallying behind the team because I believe better days are ahead.”
Shabana will return to FKF Premier League action on Saturday against Sofapaka, with Michira hopeful of earning more minutes or even a first start in months as he continues his comeback.
