Moaning, whining and ripping his players in public: The old Mourinho is back

Conceding three goals in the space of 7 minutes is always a bad thing in football. But it can be ‘forgiven’, given the circumstances. Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, his circumstances are too bad to be forgiven. Roma’s seven-minute meltdown against Juventus are just one small stone in his path to self-destruction. Since taking over, the Portuguese has gone from good to bad and now it looks like it’s going from bad to worse. Losing winnable games, being humiliated in the Conference league, constant whining about the refereeing, complaining about the squad strength, criticizing players in public….it doesn’t look good.

Mourinho came at the start of the season as a savior he was expected to develop these young players and to fight for the Champions League spot. The club strengthened the squad as much as they could, and Mourinho knew that. And yet in January 2022, the fourth spot is looking as far as ever, and the Portuguese has not developed his young players, instead he is ripping them apart in the media, constantly.

“I'm not used to this team profile but I'm here. In this dressing room there are too many good players, we need nastiness. We have a bench with many limits: 70 minutes of total control of the match but we lost. We collapsed psychologically. The team suffers too much psychologically: they are too afraid. Basically, the former Tottenham boss just wants more money to spend and when he buys new players, everything will be OK. That is also not good for his players, as they are constantly hearing this in the media every day, and yet, there is no improvement on the training ground, where Mourinho is supposed to show his magic and quality. Instead, Roma is yet to win in 2022. The defense is terrible, and have conceded 7 goals in the last 48 hours. Remember the times when Mourinho’s teams were winning after ‘parking the bus’ in front of their own goal? It’s not happening anymore. He also asked for some reinforcements, but they have not shown anything so far. Ainsley Maitland-Niles had a horrible debut against Juve, and Eldor Shomurodov who came from Genoa is not the answer.

The Italian press were amused by Mourinho at the beginning, but that honeymoon is also over. They have given the Portuguese lowest grades against Juve, provoking Roma boss to defend himself by moaning about his players (again) and that vicious circle seems to be endless. It’s hard to see how is this gonna end, apart from sacking Mourinho, which would be his third sack in a row (Manchester, Tottenham), and that could happen really soon if things are not improved fast.
