Olimpique de Marseille have put a £16 million price tag on their midfielder and won’t accept anything less
Despite widespread claims that Morgan Sanson’s transfer to Aston Villa being a done deal, he was selected for OM’s Ligue 1 match at Lens on Wednesday night. The offer from England has indeed arrived, but being only the French club refused it. It wasn’t good enough.
Les Marseilles boss Andre Villas-Boas had no problem picking the player in the starting eleven despite the transfer speculation. The Portuguese tactician is counting on the 26-year-old former Montpellier start to remain calm and to get on with his job.
The Velodrome club are demanding £16 million for the player, and Villa only offered around £11.5 million. The offer was labelled “pathetic” by Villas-Boas.
“The offer was turned down because it was pathetic. Nothing on that aspect. There was an offer, which was not the one we discussed on the phone. And the offer received was pathetic... We refused immediately and the player remains focused on OM at that time. I hope that Sanson will remain professional.”
According to French newspaper La Provence, Aston Villa’s offer wasn’t the one that was previously agreed over the phone. While the tug-of-war continues, Sanson is actually playing well. This season, he scored twice and made three assists in ten starts for OM. His performances alerted Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, who sees Sanson as an upgrade on Irish midfielder Conor Hourihane, who was loaned out to Swansea City in the Championship.
