MUFYA and Rongai United played to a barren draw in regular time

South B's MUFYA FC are the champions of the inaugural Patrick Oboya Cup Tournament after edging out Rongai United 9-8 in the final on post-match penalties after playing to a barren draw in regular time.

Bonface Wambete and Victor Mutuku missed their spot-kicks for Rongai United as Mutua had the first penalty for MUFYA saved by Rongai's Ephantus Mungai but rectified and had all their other eight penalties find the net.

MUFYA's captain Razak Malo had the last kick of the ball from the penalty spot, converting his spot-kick with ease to the delight of the fans who immediately stormed the field in jubilation.

The final of the tournament sponsored by the leading betting firm Mozzart Bet was an event by itself, with fans thronging the Police Band Grounds from all walks of life.

David Otieno was the first man in the book of the referee after a foul on Rongai's Douglas Omunga 17 minutes in the game.

Moses Mwangi almost opened the scoring for Rongai United in the 36th minute after latching on to a Bonface Wambete cross but MUFYA's custodian Stima Injedi stood firm to deny him.

MUFYA would then string two attacks in quick succession, with Caleb Ouma being on the end and Dickson Omwenga on the end of the other but they narrowly missed the target.

Despite having the better chances in the first half, MUFYA could not score, and neither would the Rongai-based team and the two had to go into the breather level.

Upon resumption, Rongai United came back a reenergized side and posed much threat in the initial stages of the half.

At the stroke of the hour mark, Rongai's coach Don Magaro made a triple change, bringing in Chaly Chole, Ruben Ndino, and Joseph Wesonga for Dave Lumumba, Mwangi, and Omunga.

Wambete could have given Rongai United the lead from a freekick but his effort was put out by the sprawling Stima in goal.

MUFYA responded by bringing in Victor Onyango and Micah Chacha for Walter Juju and Clement Reis five minutes later.

MUFYA would then rest Daniel Migosi for Abraham Dawo whose immediate contribution for his side was winning a corner from his first touch of the ball but he could not inspire his side to a win in regular time, forcing the teams to go directly to penalties.
