Naibois made their debut in the top tier with a 1-0 win over Mara Sugar, having missed the opening two games of the season due to their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup against Uganda’s NEC FC.
They eventually managed to progress to the second round after edging out NEC on away goals, with the aggregate score tied at 3-3.
Former Kariobangi Sharks and AFC Leopards winger Ovella Ochieng went straight into the club’s history books when he scored their first-ever league goal — a strike that proved vital as they held on to beat Mara and leave Awendo, a ground notoriously tough for visiting teams, with all three points.
In his post-match interview, Muyoti admitted that the win was far from comfortable for his charges. He was, however, full of praise for his players for executing the game plan well, particularly their defending when the Sugar Millers piled on the pressure in the second half in search of an equaliser.
“We executed our game plan to perfection. The players were committed and defended as planned. Mara is a very good team, and playing at home gave them an edge, but I thank my players for staying composed.
In the first half, we dominated possession, and though they were stronger after we scored, I’m proud of how my players fought. The keeper also pulled off a brilliant save at a crucial moment where they could have equalised," he said.
Muyoti made a significant number of changes from the team that played against NEC on Sunday. Heroic goalkeeper Kevin Oduor, defenders Lennox Ogutu and Yusuf Mainge, midfielders Bernard Ouma and Enock Machaka, and forward Frank Ouya all either sat out or were on the bench. The coach explained the reasons behind the rotation.
“We have a big squad and today we rotated to give others a chance. Most of them are new signings, and we wanted them to feel what it means to play for the team.
It’s about finding the right balance and making sure every player is ready as the season progresses, both in the league and in the Confederation Cup.”
On the team’s ambitions for the season, Muyoti stressed that he is not looking too far ahead, with his main focus firmly on the next game.
“Our target is to take it one game at a time. We can’t look too far ahead. Competing in three tournaments means our concentration must remain high. We’ll manage the squad carefully to avoid fatigue and approach every game with the aim of winning.”
Nairobi United return to action on Monday with a match against Bidco United in Murang’a.
