Tusker creative midfielder Joseph Mwangi is over the moon after opening his goal account at the club in their 3-1 win over Nairobi City Stars on Saturday at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Two weeks ago, Mwangi admitted to being under pressure to score his first goal while in Tusker colours following his switch from Nzoia Sugar to the Ruaraka-based club.

Mwangi was arguably the best midfielder in the league last season, as he found the back of the net fourteen times and registered seven assists, turning him a hot cake in the transfer window.

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, their traditional rivals AFC Leopards, and a host of other clubs vied for Mwangi's signature, but it was the beer makers who won the race.

His last season's goal contributions saw Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat hand him his first-ever national team call-up and further included him in the team that traveled to Mauritius for the Four Nations tournament held in June.

"I am a relieved player. I was under pressure to score my first goal for the club, and I am glad I did it on Saturday," the midfielder told Mozzart Sport.

Tusker's win over City Stars saw the club move to eight points within the reach of leaders Posta Rangers who played Leopards to a one-all draw last Friday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang'ata.

Mwangi opined that the win over City Stars is a step in the direction of redemption after a rather slow start to the season.

The midfielder believes that the brewers will bridge the gap between them and the top teams after the FIFA international break and sustain a successful title hunt.

"We will catch up with the top teams. We are playing better than we used to do in the opening five rounds of the season, which is an indication that we are gelling well. It is too early to write us off," he added.
