Nairobi United Youth defender Yunis Abdullahi Omar has received his maiden call-up to the Somalia U-17 national team ahead of the country's preparations for the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations CECAFA qualifiers.

The promising youngster, who is currently developing through Naiboi's youth ranks, has been included in the squad that will begin preparations for the regional qualifying tournament scheduled to take place from 10 to 25 September

The competition will determine the CECAFA representatives for the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, with Somalia aiming to secure one of the qualification slots.

According to Somali media outlet ESSN, Omar is expected to travel to Mogadishu in the coming days to link up with the national team as the technical bench intensifies preparations for the crucial regional assignment.

His inclusion is viewed as a boost to Somalia's defensive unit, with the youngster earning recognition for his continued progress at Nairobi United's youth setup.

In a statement, the Somali Football Federation welcomed the defender to the squad while reiterating its commitment to identifying and integrating talented young players from across the region and the diaspora.

"Promising young talent Yunis Abdullahi Omar is slated to arrive in Mogadishu in the coming days to join the Somalia U-17 national team training camp.

Currently developing his skills with Nairobi United Youths in Kenya, Omar's arrival marks a significant addition to the squad as the technical staff ramps up preparations for upcoming regional and international youth competitions.

The inclusion of the Kenya-based prospect highlights the Somali Football Federation's ongoing efforts to scout and integrate talented diaspora and cross-border youth players into the national setup, bolstering the team's depth and competitiveness ahead of their upcoming fixtures," the statement read.

The upcoming CECAFA qualifying tournament will serve as the pathway to the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, with Somalia seeking to secure qualification through the regional championship.
