No room for error – Man City looking to avoid Bees’ sting

After dropping points against Everton in the previous round, Pep Guardiola’s side cannot afford to lose a single more point

Saturday’s clash at the Etihad Stadium is a must-win encounter for Manchester City as they continue their pursuit of the Premier League title against a highly motivated Brentford side.

Pep Guardiola’s men appeared to be building momentum after the March international break, but their ambitions suffered a significant setback earlier this week. City looked headed for defeat during a disastrous spell away to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, only for late strikes from Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku to rescue a dramatic 3-3 draw.

That result means City can no longer afford any more slip-ups. They must beat Brentford and then hope West Ham United can take points off Arsenal on Sunday.

Brentford, meanwhile, arrive in excellent spirits. Keith Andrews’s team climbed to seventh in the table after defeating West Ham last weekend, a position that currently secures qualification for the UEFA Conference League. Should Aston Villa win the competition, the Bees would be promoted to a Europa League spot instead.

With a first-ever European campaign within touching distance, Brentford will provide a stern test. City know they cannot underestimate the London club, who famously won at the Etihad in 2022. However, Guardiola’s side have already beaten Brentford twice this season, including a comfortable victory during their run to Carabao Cup success.

Team selection remains a key talking point. Rodri is nearing a return from a groin injury, but the influential midfielder was not included in the squad for the Everton match. Given City’s midfield struggles in that game, Guardiola may be tempted to restore the Ballon d’Or winner if he is fit enough.

If Rodri is not ready to start, youngster Nico O’Reilly could partner Bernardo Silva in midfield, potentially ahead of Nico Gonzalez. City remain without defenders Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, with the latter still recovering from the broken leg he suffered in January.

Further forward, Foden could be handed a rare Premier League start after Semenyo’s recent dip in form, likely joining Rayan Cherki in support of Haaland.

Brentford also have injury concerns. Fabio Carvalho and Rico Henry remain unavailable, while Jordan Henderson is nursing a knock. Vitaly Janelt has also been dealing with fitness issues, although he was named on the bench in last week’s victory.
