NSL: 3K FC bank more than half a million from Majirani Derby

While 3K fell short on the pitch, the club recorded a major off-pitch victory in ticket revenue
National Super League (NSL) side 3K FC have announced a record in gate collection revenue since earning promotion to the second-tier.

The Embu-based club collected Ksh582,550 during their hotly contested tie against Fortune Sacco, held at Moi Stadium, Embu, on Sunday, 8 June.
Dubbed the Majirani Derby, the encounter drew a packed crowd as fans from Central Kenya turned out in large numbers to witness the regional fight for bragging rights.
While 3K fell short on the pitch, the club recorded a major off-pitch victory in ticket revenue.
Fortune claimed the bragging rights with a 2-1 win, thanks to goals from former Red and Black (3K) striker Lucas Askoe and the in-form Elias Mugane.
Michael Macharia pulled one back for 3K, but it was not enough to salvage a point.
Despite the defeat, the NSL debutants took comfort in the strong financial showing.

Many fans, however, accessed the stadium without paying, resulting in minor injuries to some of our security officers. It was a lesson learnt, we will amend and make it more attractive next time.
We appreciate all our fans for the great love and support they showed us," read a statement from the team.
The club has witnessed consistently high turnouts in home matches in recent months, contributing to what can only be described as a financial windfall.
Alongside APS Bomet, 3K FC has built one of the most passionate followings in the NSL.
Their fans have become a familiar presence even at distant away fixtures, from Kisumu to Kwale and Mombasa.
Uniquely, 3K remains the only club in the league to have effectively commercialised its fan base.
The club uses an online ticketing system to manage crowds and streamline financial accountability.
Head coach Francis Chege attributes the large crowds to the team’s entertaining style of play.
“Our fans have always been supportive,” Chege told Mozzart Sport.
“We attract big crowds at home, and I believe it’s because of our brand of football. We focus on short passes and building from the back. It’s entertaining, and that draws people in.”

Chege, who holds a CAF B license and previously guided the club to promotion from Division One, admitted he was disappointed to drop all three points to their rivals.
“We dominated the first 20 minutes but then lost our structure and allowed them back into the game,” he said.
“In the second half, we came back stronger and should have scored two or three goals.”
The tactician also took a subtle dig at the prevailing playing style in the league.
“The NSL isn’t as complex as people think. Most teams play long balls and bypass the midfield. It’s something we’re going to work on, and we’ll be ready to conquer next season.”
3K currently sit ninth on the log with 44 points, while Fortune Sacco remain in the promotion hunt in third place.
Next up for Chege and his charges is a tie against Naivas FC at Dandora Stadium on Sunday, 15 June, a fixture that could play a big role in shaping the promotion race.
