NSL: Shabana obliterate Darajani Gogo to reclaim top spot

Reading Time: 2min | Fri. 23.06.23. | 17:40

Club's top scorer Peter Ogechi scored twice in the match

Defensive midfielder Peter Ogechi netted a brace to inspire Shabana to a 3-0 win over National Super League debutants Darajani Gogo in a clash staged at the Police Pavilion on Friday.

Despite playing deep in the midfield and his primary role being shielding the defense, Ogechi is the best scorer at Shabana and the midfielder with the best goal returns in the competition.

The towering player who returned to Shabana before the season kicked off after a brief spell with Gusii FC got the first goal in the 44th minute, striking a beauty of a freekick to the roof of the net.

Ogechi was not done yet as he found the back of the net in the 70th minute, rising high to head the ball home from a free kick.

Second-half substitute Nehemiah Onchiri put the result beyond the reach of Gogo after heading home beautifully a cross from the right side of the attack in the 85th minute.

Interestingly, Shabana beat Gogo by a similar scoreline in the first leg staged at the Gusii Stadium in March.

Following the win, the Glamour Boys shot to the summit of the second tier with 67 points, three above the second-placed Murang’a Seal.

The two teams have already secured automatic promotion to the top flight leaving them with the battle to clinch the league title to worry of.

Elsewhere, Mara Sugar wasted yet another chance to finish third after playing Mombasa Elite to a barren draw down at the coast.

Mara and Migori Youth are bidding to finish third and take on Wazito in the two-legged promotion/relegation playoff.

Migori, have a game in hand heading to the final rounds of the term.

Meanwhile, MFC thrashed Kiber Black Stars 4-1 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Goals from Erick Michubu, John Ochieng, Joshua Ratemo and Rama Mwambura reduced Stallone Asaba’s strike to a mere consolation.
