While all top-tier women’s sides are set to receive support, in what is seen as a move to stabilize the game during the run-in, the same cannot be said for the second tier, where only a select group of clubs will benefit, leaving the majority of NSL sides to navigate the season on their own.
Mozzart Sport understands that only six teams from the NSL have been earmarked for the FKF President’s relief package, with the remaining 14 clubs set aside for now, in a decision that appears to have been guided by a strict selection criterion.
Sources indicate that each of the selected Super League sides is likely to receive between Ksh 300,000 and Ksh 500,000, while teams in the FKF Women’s Premier League are expected to pocket Ksh 100,000 each, funds that are expected to go a long way in helping clubs manage operational costs in the closing stages of the campaign.
Luanda Villa, Darajani Gogo, Kabati Youth, Mwatate United, Vihiga United, and Gucha Stars are the six NSL teams set to benefit from the gesture, with the disbursement event scheduled to take place at Cape Media premises in Nairobi.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Luanda Villa chairman Moses Abwenje revealed that the selection was largely based on financial need, with priority given to clubs operating without any form of sponsorship.
“They are going to give a little help to the club. We have not been given a definite figure up to now, but the president called me yesterday, and his aides said they are choosing teams without a sponsor at all,” he explained.
Abwenje further noted that several clubs were left out of the package due to existing sponsorship arrangements, particularly those backed by betting firm Mozzart Bet Kenya Limited, which at the start of the 2025/2026 NSL season committed to supporting several teams as part of its investment in grassroots football development.
Migori Youth, 3K FC, Soy United, and Kisumu All Stars benefited from the sponsorship deal, with each side receiving Ksh 6 million.
Additionally, more financially stable sides in the league, including Fortune Sacco, Naivas, and Equity Bank, are understood to have been left out as they were deemed to have the capacity to sustain their operations without immediate intervention.
“Only six teams will be given some money since they are thought not to have anything. They said that at least other teams like Soy and Migori were beneficiaries of Mozzart Bet sponsorship and therefore will not be included in the gifting,” Abwenje added.
Beyond the immediate financial relief, FKF President Hussein Mohammed is also said to be exploring longer-term solutions for the affected clubs, including efforts to secure sponsorship for teams currently operating without financial backing in a bid to make the league more competitive and sustainable.
“Hussein also said he is looking at another sponsor to come on board and support the six teams, but the sponsor is out of the country, which is making it hard, though he did not reveal who this sponsor was, so he said he is planning something with a media house,” Abwenje revealed.
While the initiative has been welcomed in some quarters, questions remain over the source of the funds, with no official communication outlining where the money is being drawn from.
Although a well-placed source indicates that the support could be linked to a media partner that has been working closely with FKF in bringing football content closer to local audiences.
“This money may be coming from one of the media houses that has been helping FKF with their activities,” the source told Mozzart Sport.
The intervention comes at a critical point in the season, with nine matches left before the conclusion of the NSL campaign, a period that often places increased financial demands on clubs already operating under strained conditions.
For many teams in the second tier, survival has long depended on internal improvisation and limited resources, with several sides routinely battling both relegation and financial instability year in, year out.
Notably, all six clubs selected for the relief package are currently hovering in the lower end of the table, occupying positions between 14th and 20th.
