Oliech had criticized Olunga's move to the Qatari Super League

Former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech has apologized to Michael Olunga after his recent comments where he hinted that the Al-Duhail striker should not have moved to the Qatari league.

In a recent interview, Oliech whose first club outside the country was Qatari’s Al Arabi said Olunga has the qualities to play in Europe and didn’t understand why the Harambee Stars forward opted to move to Duhail in Qatar earlier this year after leaving Kashiwa Reysol of Japan.

His sentiments drew mixed reactions from stakeholders with some agreeing with him while some bashed him for ‘disrespecting’ Olunga’s choice of club.

Oliech has now apologized to the striker after facing some backlash. In an interview, the former attacker said he did not mean to offend Olunga by criticizing his choice of club and league.

“I have been castigated by several people over my utterances and I want to take this opportunity to apologize to Olunga, I did not mean to offend him. For me it was too early for him to go there. Maybe he should move to Qatar at around 31,” he said during the Tikitaka show on Friday morning.

Oliech went further to explain why he feels Olunga should not be playing in Qatar. According to him, the Qatari league is meant for retirees, and young players should not be featuring there.

“I played to Qatar when I was 19 with players like Taribo West and Steffan Effenberg, these are players who were retiring. Most players were moving to Qatar at the sunset of their careers and for me, it is a league of retirees, you do not find young quality players there,” he added.

Kajole as he is affectionately referred to by his peers still hopes that Olunga will leave the Qatari league as soon as possible.

“He will score many goals there but I hope that he leaves that league as soon as possible,” he added.

Olunga has hit the ground running in Qatar as has so far scored 14 goals in 18 appearances.
