Olunga ranked among the best in Asia as Son Heung-min continues dominance

His ranking in 2022 was a slight improvement from that of 2021

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was ranked 13th at the Best Footballer in Asia awards in 2022 following his exploits with his Qatari side Al Duhail.

Tottenham winger Son Heung-min won voted the best in Asia in 2022 for the sixth year in a row, taking home his eighth accolade in the prize's ten-year history.

For Olunga, his 13th rank in 2022 was an improvement from the previous edition where he was ranked 14 but his points tally dropped by half from 12 in 2021 to just six in 2022.

The Kenyan ranked ahead of Nigerian international and former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo who now turns out for Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal and was placed 12th with four points.

Porto's Mehdi Taremi came second with 120 points following his display while on duty for Iran while Brighton & Hove Albion's Kaoru Mitoma of Japan was fourth with 91 points.

Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu is another notable name on the list at eight place with 37 points.

Last year, Olunga won the Emir Cup with Duhail, scoring one of the five goals as Duhail beat Al Gharafa 5-1 in the final. On top of that, he finished as the top scorer in the 2021/22 Qatar Stars League campaign with 24 goals as his side settled for a second-place finish in the league.
