The veteran midfielder responded brutally to Onana's comments regarding tomorrow's Europa League clash between Manchester United and Olympique Lyon

This must be one of the most brutal preludes to a Europa League game in recent history.

Olympique Lyon veteran and former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic said on Wednesday that Andre Onana is "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history". Matic, who represented United between 2017 and 2022, said that at the press conference ahead of Thursday's UEL quarter-final first leg between Lyon and United.

Previously, Onana told reporters that the Red Devils are "way better" than the French side.

"Of course, it's not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them."

Responding to this statement, 36-year-old Matic said today:

"You need to have cover to say something like that. Onana? You know, I respect everyone but to say that, you need to give the answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history, you need to take care about what you are talking about," said Matic before adding:

"If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or (Edwin) Van der Sar said that, then I would question myself, but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's modern history, he needs to show that before he says it. So we will see."

A few hours later, Onana responded to Matic's harsh comments by saying he actually won some trophies with United, unlike the Serbian player.

"I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least, I've lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can't say the same, concluded Onana.

Onana has conceded 41 goals in 31 Premier League games this season and ten goals in eight Europa League games this campaign, keeping just one clean sheet.
