Thibaut Courtois has revealed this World Cup could be the final act of his remarkable career
This World Cup could mark the end of an era.
With icons such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Neymar and Son Heung-min all expected to bring the curtain down on their international careers, another familiar face may soon be joining them.
Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has hinted that this tournament could be his last on the global stage.
The 34-year-old, whose trophy cabinet already boasts Champions League, La Liga and Premier League titles, admitted he is closer to retirement than another World Cup cycle.
"The chances are greater that I won't continue after this tournament than that I will," Courtois told reporters at Belgium's training base.
While the Real Madrid star insists he still wants to play for a few more years, he acknowledged the physical demands of extending a career at the highest level.
"My family is here because this could be my last tournament," he added.
For one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation, the final whistle may be drawing nearer.
