KCB forward hopes club can replicate Leicester's 2016 heroics
KCB are drawing inspiration in their pursuit to toast the Football Kenya Federation Premier League(FKFPL) title from the Leicester City squad which clinched the English Premier League (EPL) in 2016, striker Henry Onyango has opened up.
Leicester arguably produced the biggest sporting shock ever by defying odds to claim the coveted EPL crown in the 2015-2016 season ahead of the big boys who have been dominating the competition since its inception in 1992.
Onyango who ditched Western Stima for the bankers in October 2020 says the playing unit looks up to Leicester's feat and are working their socks off to win the first league title. The Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno coached outfit are currently ranked second with 25 points, four shy of league leaders Tusker although they have two matches in hand.
"If Leicester City did it in 2016, we are also capable of achieving it too. As a team we are drawing inspiration from their run and through hard work we will win our first league title. The technical bench assembled quality players who are motivated to bring glory to the club at the end of the season," he said.
To shoulder the burden of delivering the first title, Onyango, a Machakos Boys High School alumnus revealed his individual target of netting at least 12 goals this season. The former Kibera Black Stars forward has been consistent in front of goal since his arrival at the big stage in 2018 from the National Super League and he has promised to keep the fire burning this season as he seeks to help KCB achieve its objective as well as to catch the attention of Harambee Stars head coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee.
"For the team to achieve the set target, every player has to give one hundred per cent and for this reason, I dream of hitting double digits this season. This is my third season in the elite league and I feel I have come of age and time is right to set bigger targets," he disclosed.
In the meantime, the 25- year old credited his rise from Kibera slums to the country's crème de la crème football competition to coach Godfrey 'Solo' Oduor. The former pupil at Ayany Primary School said were it not for Oduor who is the current KCB assistant, his football talent would have gone down the drain.
"Solo spotted me when I was a teenager and a player at Olympic Talented FC. He brought me to Black Stars in 2014 and supported me throughout my career. As a player born and raised in Kibera, I can confidently say I have made strides in my career as a result of the guidance from Solo and other like-minded people who have been with me through thick and thin," he added.
Onyango counsels budding players from the slums to avoid being lured into crime and pick the right company.
