The Nigerian striker won the award ahead of Salah and Hakimi

Mohamed Salah is a great player who won many trophies with Liverpool and continues to break records with the Reds. But this season, the best player from Africa was Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian won a long-awaited title with Napoli (33 years) and scored 26 goals in the process (best scorer in Italy), enough for the reward ahead of Salah and Achraf Hakimi.

It is a dream come true. I have to thank everybody who has helped me on this journey, and all Africans who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults” the 24-year-old Osimhen said at the ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.

Due to the ceremony, the Nigerian striker missed the training with his team but will lead the line for the Neapolitans tonight against Braga. Napoli all but qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League behind Real Madrid, and only a possible defeat with more than one goal margin could prevent them from going to the Round of 16. Off course, Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri doesn’t want to gamble, so the striker, who scored six goals in 14 appearances across all competitions this season, will start.

The Nigerian used the opportunity to speak about the TikTok incident last night in Morocco, and claimed that he is no longer angry with the club for the unfortunate post which was published in September.

I must clarify something. I was not treated badly by Napoli or De Laurentiis. I’m sorry to say this word, but it was a stupid error from somebody who thought he could use a thing like that to joke at a crucial moment. I was certainly not happy, but De Laurentiis, his son Edoardo and many at the club have supported me. They explained the situation, and even the person responsible for it was really nice to me. That was the most important thing. I spoke to that person and he proved to be deeply sorry. Everything has been solved, so I am happy with them. Now I look to the future to leave it behind. This story belongs to the past” Osimhen said on Monday after being named African Player of the Year.
