Sure, this was just a friendly, but still... It doesn't get much worse than that. A U-20 side battered them 5-1

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag suffered a genuine humiliation on Friday night on his Bayer Leverkusen debut as they were battered 5-1 by Flamengo's U-20 side.

Ten Hag opted for a rather young starting XI in their first pre-season game, which took place in Rio de Janeiro. Alas, it proved to be a woeful call.

They conceded the opener after only two minutes, and Flamengo doubled the lead within the opening ten minutes.

Two more goals in the back of Leverkusen's net before the break killed the tie, although Ten Hag tried to save some dignity by bringing in some experienced players during the interval, like Granit Xhaka, Patrik Schick, and Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba.

However, it was too late to change much, with a goal apiece in the second half, resulting in an embarrassing result in his maiden game as the Leverkusen boss.

Ten Hag's team will return to Germany to take on Bochum in their second pre-season match next weekend, after which they'll face Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands at the start of August.

The Dutch tactician was sacked by Manchester United last October following a string of poor Premier League results.
