Kenya held leads both during normal time and in the penalty shootouts, but could not squeeze out a win

Kenya men's football side Harambee Stars saw their run at their debut African Nations Championships (CHAN) end in painful defeat on Friday, 22 August after falling 4-3 to Madagascar on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Several players however stood out in the lengthy match, and Mozzart Sport takes you through their overall ratings.

Bryne OdhiamboGoalkeeper
Went quite untested in the first half, but became busy as the game wore on. He had a big save deep in extra time to keep Kenya level, and despite conceding a penalty in normal time, he saved one in the shootouts to give Harambee Stars some hope of advancing.

Lewis BandiMidfield
Had a quiet game from the gates, and many will look back at his handball, which gave Madagascar a chance to level, and ultimately win the tie.

4
Michael KibwageDefense
Solid as always. Hang around everywhere in that defense, oftenly drifting to wide right when Kenya were on the attack. Will not be to blame for the Madagascar equalizer, but missed from the spot in the shoot-outs.
Rating
5
Alphonce OmijaDefense
Made his mark, if he had not made any for Harambee Stars, with a bullet header to give Kenya the lead in the second half. Was ever commanding at center, but unfortunately just like his partner in defense, missed from the spot to hand Madagascar the win.

Aboud OmarDefense
Battled hard there like a captain would do. He started actively and almost gave Kenya the lead in the first five minutes, and was a big outlet in the second half. Only blot on his paper was that the Madagascar goal came from his wing, and he did not front up to take a penalty.
Rating
6
Marvin NabwireMidfield
Had a burner of a game. Whether in midfield or sneaking on the right side of attack, Nabwire gave his all , and run himself to the ground for the entire 120 plus minutes.

Alpha Onyango Midfield
My man-of-the-match. He deserved that award at the end, and all for his tireless effort in midfield. Having looked flat last time out against Zambia, he was the dynamo on Friday evening, looking to link play to the forwards, and stopped multiple Malagasy transitions.

Manzur OkwaroDefense
Took a couple of hits early on but showed his mental strength to keep going for 83 minutes. Still crazy that a man of his age was relied upon in a knock-out.

Bonface MuchiriAttack
His exploits from the bench meant he warranted a start on Friday, and his inclusion paid dividends with a delightful assist to Omija for the opener. On a day when he was being closely marked and thrown off rhythm, his boot via a set piece made do.

Benstanley OmondiMidfield
Played 83 minutes and was involved a bit more on offense. His work off the ball was delightful, but it was his push on a defender that got Ogam's goal disallowed.

Ryan OgamAttack
After back-to-back strikes, Friday was not his day. The wingers were looking to set him up early on, but the Madagascar defense had his number. He got one to go in later on, but it was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Edward OndimoAttack
Brought some directness when he came on, but could not carry his danger in extra time after seemingly picking up a problem with his foot.
Rating
4
Masoud Juma ChokaAttack
Was marked out after coming on, just as he was against Zambia.
Rating
3
Daniel SakariDefense
Shut up shop in extra time and scored Kenya's second penalty with much maturity.
Rating
4
Siraj Mohammed Defense
Opened up Kenya's attack down the wings when he came on, especially with his long range of passing. Stepped up to take Kenya's first penalty and put it away.
Rating
4
Sylvester OwinoDefense
Was a surprise to see him miss out on McCarthy's starting lineup, but was involved late on. Looked like a gamble to put him on just for the shootouts, but he dispatched his effort.
Rating
4
Austine OdongoAttack
Finally made his CHAN debut after coming in from the bench. Almost had a dream introduction but saw his header sail over the bar. Caused a few problems for the Madagascar defense, but not enough to score.
