Olympique fans are also preparing a protest at the game with Strasbourg
La Classique was over six days ago, but it still lives on in the fans’ memories. Both PSG and Marseille ultras were unable to face each other, mainly because Olympique fans were banned from attending the game in Paris. Since PSG humiliated their rival with a 5-0 win, the need for ‘revenge’ became greater so, according to La Provence, both set of ultras arranged a ‘meeting’. Luckily for everybody, the police managed to resolve the situation. Around 15 PSG fans came this morning, on the day of the Marseille – Strasbourg game, to the south of France in order to clash with the Olympique ultras. A pre-arranged “fight” between PSG and OM ultras was allegedly set to take place on the sidelines of a National 2 fixture between Nîmes and Toulon.
But some Marseille fans decided to make an ‘ambush’ for the visitors and gathered at Marseille’s Saint-Charles station, where PSG fans were about to change trains. Luckily for everybody at the station, the police were present and separated the two groups, even throwing tear gas to prevent trouble. Three fans were arrested as the majority of Marseille fans prepare for the first game without Roberto De Zerbi at the helm. The Italian mutually agreed with the club’s executives that future cooperation was not possible and left the club. Sporting director Medhi Benatia also blames the players for the current situation and even offered his own resignation after De Zerbi’s departure, but it was denied. The fans will also stage a protest today, as the most loyal ultras plan to stay outside the stadium for the first 15 minutes of the game.
Their reaction is expected by the interim coach Pancho Abardonado, who will lead the team before Marseille finds another manager.
“The public will be a bit difficult at first, that's understandable. You have to be focused on the pitch. It's not easy, we'll explain it to them. There will certainly be banners, chants. You have to know that when you sign for Marseille. We are capable of changing this situation” he said.
