The reigning FKF Women’s Premier League champions opened their campaign with a narrow but important 1-0 win over Kampala Queens on Thursday, 4 September.
Substitute Emily Kemunto Morang’a struck in the 46th minute to hand Bullets maximum points and early leadership of Group A. That victory put the hosts in a strong position heading into their second fixture.
The group dynamics shifted on Sunday, 7 September, when Kampala Queens thrashed tournament debutants Denden FC 7-0 at the same venue.
The Ugandan champions scored twice inside the opening eight minutes through Kamiyata Naigaga and Turist Lema Tone before Peace Muduwa added a third before halftime.
Further goals from Tone, Naigaga, and Muduwa after the break sealed an emphatic win, placing Kampala Queens level on three points with Bullets.
The result means Bullets require just a draw against Denden to confirm their progression. However, an unlikely win for the Eritreans could hand Kampala Queens the advantage.
With the Ugandans having completed their group matches, the clash between Bullets and Denden will determine the final standings.
Coach Beldine Odemba’s side is featuring in the regional qualifiers for the second successive year. Last season, Bullets reached the CECAFA final but were edged 1-0 by Ethiopia’s CBE, narrowly missing out on qualification for the continental finals.
This year, they are seeking to go one better and secure Kenya’s second-ever slot at the CAF Women’s Champions League, following Vihiga Queens’ historic breakthrough in 2021.
“We are very much prepared for the match against Denden. Though we don’t know them very well, we saw their match against Kampala Queens, which they lost by a big margin, and we have noted some of their weaknesses that we will capitalise on,” Odemba said in an interview.
She also thanked fans who showed up for the opening game while urging them to turn up again on Wednesday: “I want to thank all our fans for coming in large numbers to support us.
That alone is a big motivation for the girls, and being the home team, we must prove our superiority by winning all our matches.”
The CECAFA qualifiers bring together nine league champions from across the region, with only the overall winner earning a ticket to represent the zone at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals in Egypt this November.
