Reports from Marca are suggesting that the Argentinian could move in June transfer window
Kylian Mbappe's transfer to Real Madrid was finally made official on the evening of June 3rd. After several transfer windows of negotiations, convincing, and rejections, followed by months of anticipation, the French forward definitively became a new player for the Royal Club last Monday. This move has ‘erased’ one high-profile name from the June transfer market of 2024, but Manchester City’s striker Julian Alvarez has suddenly emerged as a potential transfer target. The Argentine is reportedly unhappy with the amount of playing time he has been receiving under Pep Guardiola and has informed his representatives to explore interested clubs. It's clear that a player of his quality has quickly attracted a lot of attention.
Atletico Madrid was mentioned first, followed by Chelsea and Manchester United, and then Paris Saint-Germain. The news from ‘Marca’ about Atletico Madrid's desire to sign the 24-year-old Argentine was somewhat sparse. Other than stating that Diego Simeone would like to see him in his team and that they would try to influence him through other Argentine players in Atletico's ranks during the upcoming Copa America, there were no detailed reports. However, as time passes, this news is gaining more attention, especially since the Argentine version of ESPN reported that Alvarez could move to Paris Saint-Germain for 80 million euros. Paris Saint-Germain will certainly be on the hunt for a replacement for Mbappe, and money is not an issue for them... The high transfer fee initially puts Atletico Madrid in a less favourable position, but not the English clubs mentioned by local portals. However, Chelsea and Manchester United regularly express "interest" whenever a high-profile name is mentioned, so this information should be taken with caution.
Before coming to Europe, Julian Alvarez played as a classic centre forward for River Plate, whereas at City, that position is reserved for Erling Haaland, which causes the Argentine to play more fluidly across the field. Guardiola has used him as a winger and, during Kevin De Bruyne's injury, even as a number ten. In the past season, the 24-year-old from Cordoba made 54 appearances across all competitions, spending a total of 3,479 minutes on the field (an average of 38.6 minutes per match), during which he scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists. Considering he arrived as a star of Argentine football, was bought for around 22 million euros, and has since become a world champion, it is clear that Alvarez feels he deserves greater trust from the coach. However, this is challenging given Haaland's scoring prowess, and it wouldn’t be surprising if City brings in another striker this summer. Names like Bayern’s Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala have been mentioned.
