The decision, confirmed on Tuesday, 7 April, brings to an end a week-long period of uncertainty that had threatened both the club’s domestic campaign and the momentum of its players, none more so than Opiyo, who is in the early stages of establishing himself abroad.
Zesco’s suspension stemmed from a contentious legal standoff with the Football Association of Zambia, after the Ndola-based outfit sought intervention from the High Court of Zambia in protest over their exclusion from the ABSA Cup.
The move was deemed to have bypassed established football dispute resolution channels, prompting disciplinary action that saw the club temporarily barred from league activities.
However, in a significant turnaround, the Zambian Premier League lifted the suspension, paving the way for ZESCO’s immediate return to competitive action.
In an official statement, the club confirmed their reinstatement and expressed gratitude to their supporters:
“We are pleased to inform our supporters and all of our valued stakeholders that Zesco United Football Club’s suspension from the league has officially been lifted.
We sincerely thank you for your patience, loyalty, and unwavering support during this period.”
The Ndola-based outfit are now set to resume their campaign with a rescheduled fixture against Green Eagles at Independence Stadium in Choma on Thursday, 9 April.
For Opiyo, formerly of Gor Mahia and Bandari FC, the development represents more than just administrative relief; it restores a crucial platform to continue his growth in a competitive environment.
The shot-stopper has already established himself as a dependable presence between the posts for the nine-time Zambian Premier League champions, earning regular starts since his arrival just four months ago.
With ambitions of breaking into Kenya’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, consistent game time remains vital, and Zesco’s return ensures his progress remains uninterrupted.
Currently sitting 11th on the table with 31 points, albeit with three matches in hand, Zesco United will be eager to turn the page on recent disruptions.
A strong run of results could yet propel them into the top five, reaffirming their status among Zambia’s elite while offering players like Opiyo the stage to thrive.
