A surprising replacement for Mendilibar

Diego Alonso once shook the nets all over Spain in the jerseys of Valencia, Atlético, Racing, Malaga and Murcia, and now he has the opportunity to leave his mark as a coach in the Pyrenees.

The Uruguayan expert was chosen as the new coach of Sevilla and on Tuesday afternoon his arrival at the Ramon Sánchez Pizjuan stadium was officially confirmed.

The team from Andalusia entered the season weakly. After fierce resistance to Manchester City in the European Super Cup and defeat on penalties, Sevilla recorded two draws against Lens and PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. Their form is even poorer in the Spanish championship, where after eight rounds they have only two victories and sit in disappointing 14th place. And it all broke of the back of the experienced expert Jose Luis Mendilibar. He came to put out the fire in March, saved Sevilla from relegation and won the Europa League, but already after the departure of director Monchi to Aston Villa, it was speculated that his position was threatened. The results the team has been recording have been decisive...

Even as Mendilibar's replacement was being prepared, Sevilla sought a successor. The leaders of the club Del Nido Carrasco and Jose Castro gave the directive to the sports director Orta to find a domestic solution that knows the environment, there was speculation about the names of Marcelino and Javi Gracia, even about the arrival of Marcelo Gallardo, but the choice surprisingly fell on Diego Alonso.

The Uruguayan has been out of work since he ingloriously ended his term as a coach at the World Cup in Qatar. Before that, he managed many clubs, but none in Europe. He started in the Uruguayan Bela Vista, then managed the Paraguayan Guarana, then the local giant Peñarol, the Mexican clubs Pachuca and Monterrey before spending two years in the American Inter Miami. He had the most success in Pachuca, where he spent four years, winning the Champions League and domestic championship, and won the continental crown three years later with Monterrey.

He has 12 years of coaching experience and knows Spanish football from his playing days, but this will be the biggest challenge of his career.
