'Hero' Hojbjerg helps a collapsed man outside Spurs home ground

Months ago, at EURO 2020, Christian Eriksen (former Tottenham footballer) suffered a cardiac arrest. This passed Saturday night, his Denmark team-mate and current Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg confronted another distressing health drama.

In the moments following the 3-0 defeat by Manchester United, the 26-year-old Spurs midfielder spotted a person in need of aid on the perimeter of Tottenham’s home ground and raced out of his car to offer his help to the stricken individual.

People passing by complimented Hojbjerg for remaining at the scene and hailed him as a ‘hero’ — Hojbjerg insisted he was simply doing what anyone else would do.

The London Ambulance Service was called to the incident but an emergency vehicle was not required as there was already one on site. The man was treated by medical staff before being transferred to nearby North Middlesex Hospital.

What makes the whole situation even more eerie is that the episode happened two weeks after a supporter collapsed at St James’ Park during Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Newcastle in which Hojbjerg played.

If it wasn't for the Dane's team mates Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon and their quick thinking, that fan’s life would not have been saved.

Albeit the following does not include a Spurs' footballer, former or current, it does include another Scandinavian player. Icelandic footballer Emil Palsson collapsed after suffering a heart attack during a Norwegian league game on Monday. The 28-year-old midfielder suddenly fell over in the 12 minute of the game in western Norway.

Apart from footballers who originate from the far north of the European continent, or those who play/ed for the north London club - cases of players collapsing are becoming more and more frequent. Most recent example - Argentinian star Sergio Kun Aguero felt severe chest pains during Barcelona's Saturday match against Alaves and slowly went to the ground.

Also, Ghana striker Raphael Dwemana is in recovery mode after collapsing during an Austrian Cup game past Wednesday.

The Ghanaian, who was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2017 and has had to play with an implanted defibrillator, went down during the first half of the midweek fixture, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of the game. He was immediately rushed to the hospital after receiving prompt medical attention on the pitch.
