Omondi took over at United on Soy United on Sunday.

New Soy United head coach James ‘Odijo’ Omondi is adamant that the club will not be relegated from the National Super League (NSL) at the end of the current campaign.

Soy is currently 19th in the log with 17 points after 18 rounds of league matches. They are firmly in the relegation zone and risk dropping back to Division One League unless they turn things around in the foreseeable future.

The club has now tasked Omondi with saving the team’s season. The tactician has returned to the team that he coached in 2018 while in Division Two League. He reported to work on Sunday and was in charge of the league match between his side and Gusii FC, a match the Kisii-based side lost by a solitary goal.

Ahead of what my promises to be a herculean task, Omondi is calm. He says the target is to lift the team to the top ten positions.

Soy United will not be relegated from the National Super League. I have been in this situation before and I know that we will be out of the danger zone soon and my target is to finish in the top ten positions in the league,” he told Mozzart Sport.

The narrow point gap between teams in the NSL gives the tactician confidence. He says registering only two wins can lift the team from the red zone to a good position.

When you look at the point-gap between the teams in the NSL, it’s tight and just two wins can lift you from bottom to almost the 10th position. This gives me confidence but we have to start winning matches as soon as possible, we have to implement that plan I have on the pitch,” he added.

Odijo revisited his side’s weekend match against Gusii FC and he says the team played well bar for the few mistakes that they made in the game. He further admitted that his side was ill-prepared as they had barely trained together heading into the game.

They played well considering that they were not even training together. Some players actually arrived one hour before kick-off from home and you could see that they were fighting for the team, we wasted many chances and Gusii FC got one and scored. We will fine-tune a few things and we will be okay,” he concluded.

Next for Soy is a match against Silibwet FC.
